Large magnifica anemones need food daily, medium sized need to be fed 5 times a week, and the young or smaller ones need to be fed 2 to 3 times a week. This variety is very good for these anemones, as they seem to derive their different dietary needs from these meats. All overflow and other similar areas should have their intakes covered with a sponge, to prevent damage should your anemone go wondering around the aquarium.įood and diet: Feed your Heteractis magnifica a mix of chopped fresh shrimp, fish and mussel from your grocery store. Finally be careful with powerheads in marine systems containing anemones, as the animal can and will be killed if caught by the pump intake. Direct hard flow toward the anemone is not good, but it does appreciate moderate swaying water flow motions. It also requires moderate water movement, but it cannot handle stronger than that. The Ritteri will then climb high to gain more light, just as it does in the ocean. To help provide adequate lighting, we highly suggest a tower of live rock be built up to just under the tanks water surface. Requiring the typical live rock/reef environment, its marine tank needs to be a minimum size of 50 gallons and it must be a mature tank, up and running a minimum of 1 year. Requiring excellent water quality with minimal nitrates, good water flow, strong lighting and plenty of food are the key factors in keeping a Ritteri anemone both healthy and thriving. Since it is one of the very challenging to keep it is recommended for the advanced marine aquarist, a zoo, or marine research institution. Tank Recommendations: A beautiful anemone that is coveted by the experienced reefers. They are accompanied by clownfish, which form a symbiotic relationship for the protection and nourishment of both animals. In the wild Ritteri anemone grow to over 35 inches in diameter, but in an aquarium they grow to between 16 and 18 inches. They can be found singly or grouped in dense colonies. Unlike other anemones that hide in the substrate or deep crevices, the Heteractis magnifica prefer to live higher up on the reef, often with much of their body visible. Ritteri anemone are found in waters at depths from only 3 feet of water to 33 feet in shallow reefs. Found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean from the Red Sea to Somoa.
